Tom’s Music For All method teaches music in a simple and fun way. Learn from basics to advanced theory in a natural and fun way with the new Tom’s Music For All method.

Why?

Since I started to study music, more than 30 years ago, I realized that for me, my classmates and everyone else, learning the fundamentals of music and music theory was very complicated and boring. This made and still makes students give up theory and learn only the practical part of studying instruments and singing. This makes music students know very little or nothing about the fundamentals of music and music theory. This brings an incomplete knowledge of music, causing students to have limited knowledge and at some point become stagnant, unable to evolve further, due to lack of knowledge.

And as I progressed in my studies, I realized that there are two types of students and even music professionals. The first type is formed by those who decide to study music and dedicate themselves professionally, going to professional courses and music faculties, submitting themselves to hours and hours of complex theoretical studies – this is an hard path and aimed only at those who want to become professional musicians. The second group is those who start to study music, start studying music theory, get tired and end up staying only in practice, becoming, most of the time, musicians with several gaps in their training, with incomplete knowledge, flawed and who cannot evolve from a certain point due to lack of knowledge.

Music theory class

In music theory classes the student will learn in a complete and comprehensive way, but in a practical and fun way, making learning light and intuitive. Theory classes are structured around four disciplines, based on professional schools and music faculties. During classes, students will learn concepts of rhythm, perception, structuring and appreciation, in practical exercises, which makes learning more interesting and natural. The methodology is designed in order to pass the content comprehensively, step by step, without skipping important concepts. This makes the student learn consistently and continuously, and they can see that the theory is easier and more interesting than he imagined.

Instrument lessons
Instrument classes are based on three main topics for more efficient and thorough study. These topics are: theory applied to the instrument, technique exercises and repertoire.

In the theory applied to the instrument, the student will learn music theory with exercises on the chosen instrument. This practice makes the student have a more complete musical knowledge, understanding what he is doing and managing to improve better.

In the technique exercises, the student will practice the movement of the arms, hands and fingers, becoming more prepared to play more efficiently.

The repertoire refers to the songs that the student will learn in class. This repertoire will be built with a mix of songs that students like with songs that teach some specific content, making the class attractive and fun and also with a lot of content.

These three topics will be presented in all classes, making learning complete. In this way, the student will learn to play faster, better and with more autonomy to improve.

Accoustic Guitar

Accoustic Guitar lessons are divided into three parts: theory applied to the guitar, technique and repertoire.

1- Technique: in this topic, we will do exercises to move the fingers of the guitar fingerboard and the accompaniment hand. Among the scale hand exercises, we will do 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4 movements, scale exercises, triads, arpeggios, chord formation exercises, among others. For the accompanying hand, among others, we will do exercises alternating index – middle, middle – ring – index, middle and ring fingers, tapping and fingering exercises.

2- Theory: in theory, we will learn the musical notes on the fretboard, rhythmic figures and pauses, sharp and flat notes on the fretboard, formation of scales, triads and arpeggios, sheet music reading, all applied to the guitar.

3- Repertoire: the repertoire corresponds to the songs that students will learn during classes. Part of this repertoire will be based on the students’ likings, studying songs that students know, which makes learning easier and more enjoyable. The other part of the repertoire will be composed of songs that have some important teaching in the technical part, in the knowledge of chords, beats and fingerings. When playing new music, students have contact with new musical genres, new artists and thus expand their knowledge and musical culture.

Electric Guitar

Electric guitar lessons follow the three-part division:

1- Technique: in this topic, students will do exercises to move the arms, hands and fingers in the guitar scale and accompanying hand. For the scale hand, movement exercises 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4, scales, triads, arpeggios, riffs will be performed, and for the accompaniment hand several picking exercises will be performed.

2- Theory: knowledge of theory will be applied to the guitar. Among this knowledge, the student will learn to locate musical notes on the fretboard, figures and musical pauses, formation of scales, triads, chords, sheet music reading, among others.

3- Repertoire: The repertoire of classes will be composed of songs that students know and like, to make the study more fun and attractive and of songs that will teach some new knowledge, such as chords, fingerings, beats, rhythmic and melodic phrases, among others. In this contact with new music, the student expands his knowledge and his musical culture.

Bass Guitar

As with other instrument classes, bass guitar classes are made up of three parts:

1- Technique: In the technique part, students will do exercises to move the arms, hands and fingers of the bass scale and accompanying hand. For the hand of the scale, exercises of scales, triads, arpeggios, melodic passages, riffs, among others will be performed. For the accompanying hand, exercises will be performed alternating the index – middle, middle – ring, index – ring fingers and movements with the thumb, pizzicato, slap, among others.

2- Theory applied to the bass guitar: We will study the concepts of music theory, applied to the bass guitar. Among them, natural notes and altered notes on the bass, formation of scales, triads, arpeggios, figures and musical pauses, various rhythmic figurations, sheet music reading in the bass clef, among other concepts.

3- Repertoire: a bass guitar student needs to master several musical genres. For this, the student must know the specific elements of each style, such as the most used rhythmic figurations, melodic material – harmonic characteristic of the genres. In the bass guitar repertoire we will also mix songs that the students prefer with others that teach some technical, rhythmic, melodic and harmonic aspect. That way the study of the bass will be fun, attractive and complete at the same time.

The second group is those who start to study music, start studying music theory, get tired and end up staying only in practice, becoming, most of the time, musicians with several gaps in their training, with incomplete knowledge, flawed and who cannot evolve from a certain point due to lack of knowledge. There is a valley between these two groups. On the one hand, a small group of musicians who have the knowledge to go further in music and on the other, the vast majority who end up focusing on musical practice, becoming limited musicians, with several gaps in training.

And this problem is caused by the lack of a methodology capable of teaching music concepts and music theory in a simple, pleasant and fun way, taking this knowledge to all people.

That’s why, since I started teaching music more than 25 years ago, I’ve been developing techniques, ideas and activities capable of transforming this complicated music teaching into something accessible to everyone.

During these more than 25 years of experience, I brought together all my experience as an music educator, musician, producer and music researcher to produce the innovative musical method Tom’s Music For All.
